About the show

Every time a plane crashes, the world takes notice. And so do the experts whose job it is to figure out what happened. Mayday uncovers the truth behind the most legendary aviation disasters. Every episode features eyewitness accounts, captivating reenactments, state-of-the-art CGI, and interviews with the investigators who ultimately determined what went wrong.

The twisted wreckage at the crash site tells part of the story; investigators can use it to learn about the final seconds of a flight and rule out mechanical failures. The flight data and cockpit voice recorders are critical, but they don’t always reveal what happened. It almost always takes a tragic combination of factors to bring down an airplane. Unraveling the complex mystery is a painstaking process that takes months—and sometimes years—of detective work.

From maintenance issues, dangerous cargo, and aircraft design, to extreme weather, pilot error, and even sabotage, investigators need to find the exact cause of every accident to ensure it never happens again. Air crash investigators owe it to the victims, the survivors, and their families to examine every clue and ultimately crack the case.

On this bonus season of Mayday, every episode examines multiple cases under a central theme: Explosive Evidence recounts stories of passenger planes that were both deliberately and accidentally targeted; Hero Pilots chronicles the extraordinary efforts in the cockpit as pilots struggle to save an otherwise doomed aircraft; and, Deadly Distractions outlines the potentially fatal consequences of even minor mistakes in the cockpit.

Also featured on Mayday: A single spark can ignite a terrifying Fire On Board; Misunderstood reveals the catastrophic potential of  a miscommunication in the sky; and, on Invisible Clues, perseverance and ingenuity pay off as investigators face the toughest cases of all.
