Episode 1 - Orca
About the show
In the warm waters off Northland, host and underwater cameraman Kina Scollay leaps into the water with a group of orca. They’re several times his size, and they’re on the hunt. Tensions run high. But he’s in the hands of Ingrid Visser, world expert on New Zealand orca. She knows these animals by name, and she’s known many of them for 30 years. Orca have never attacked humans in the wild - but jumping in with these apex predators isn’t something you take lightly. Once Kina’s in the water, these massive marine mammals - top hunters in every ocean on earth - charge the camera, then pause, and take a good look.
It’s not easy, tracking down New Zealand orca. They patrol our coastline, travelling hundreds of kilometres a day. Based up at Tutukaka, Kina and Ingrid receive calls from the public, and launch a series of adventures across land and sea. The aim is to get up close and personal, to get Kina right amongst these predators so that he can get extraordinary footage, and learn all he can.
Kina finds himself in a rock pool with hunting orca. We witness prey being torn apart, right in front of the camera. An urban orca encounter is achieved, right in front of Auckland’s Sky Tower and beneath the harbour bridge, and Ingrid and Kina get taken by surprise by a desperate call for help. An orca has stranded in the South Island - they make a mercy dash to try to save the life of a teenage male orca, whose time is rapidly running out.
