250,000 people go missing in the UK every year. Some are found alive, some have taken their own lives and others simply vanish. But there are vast numbers of cases in the UK where missing person investigations suddenly become the worst thing imaginable. This series reveals first-hand the impact on families, the police process, and the emotional and investigative shift ‘when missing turns to murder’.
Each episode is built around one resolved case - from the moment a family report a loved one missing, to the moment someone is convicted of their murder. Every case will be told in a present-tense, unfolding manner, seamlessly combining the police process and family emotions as a missing person investigation unfolds, building to the moment it turns into a murder investigation, and then ultimately to the arrest, charge and conviction of a killer.
Back when small towns still felt safe, the people of the Lewis-Clark Valley confronted a new kind of terror. It started in the late 1970s when five local youth mysteriously vanished. Worried parents began walking their kids to school and keeping them indoors after dark. Then, someone found body parts, wrapped in black garbage bags and floating in a river. Police feared they had a serial killer on their hands but soon the case went cold. A community’s innocence lost. Chilling unsolved crimes. A suspect police can’t pin down. Now, Detective Jackie Nichols is on the case and she’s determined to get justice.
“You Asked To See The Monster…so here is the monster you made me” Gary Green wrote, a year after his wife filed for divorce. “There will be five lives taken today – me being the 5th”. Green intended to kill his wife and her three children, shortly after she had requested a divorce. Green’s haunting letter stated “I pray the lord allows my soul to enter Heaven. If not I will burn in Hell forever.” He currently resides on death row, after stabbing her more than 20 times and drowning her 6 year old daughter. However after pleading for their lives, the two sons managed to escape from their stepfather. Now aged 18 and 21, this is their traumatic and emotional story, told for the first time.
